Mnemonic for Ryan Trecartin

Ryan Trecartin sounds like "tree carting." I drew Ryan as he appears in his video I-Be AREA. If you commit this image to memory, you'll be able to remember his name.

This is my first drawing in a series of mnemonics to remember contemporary artists' names. I base these drawings on Dean Vaughn's memory system in How to Remember Anything. By the way, you can remember his name by visualizing Vince Vaughn in a graduation cap. As with all mnemonics, the more outlandish the image, the more memorable.

I've begun incorporating auditory sensations to my regular haptic feelings. I included the album name in the title of each drawing. I only seem to "feel" music in my head and face, so the musical influence should only be near the top, or "head," of these drawings.

Chalkboard Connectors at CMA

Next time you find yourself in CMA's Center for Creativity, be sure to pick up a piece of chalk and draw the craziest Rube Goldberg machine you can imagine. I designed each problem and drew the prompts on the boards using paint marker.

This board makes museum-goers say, "Oh my!" I had fun drawing this solution today. I call it "Jurassic Park Ding Dong Ditch."

I think this board is my favorite. It's a little challenging because you have to figure out how to turn mechanical movement into air movement.

This pirate needs some booty. I gave him the quintessential mark of surprise: the Metal Gear Solid exclamation point. The shark obstacle makes this one just a little more challenging.

I took photos of a scrapbooking crop that my mom held in my hometown church. I like the spiral composition in the first photo, and I like my aunt's excited expression in the second photo. Also in the second photo, the reflection of the fluorescent lights creates a nice diagonal that leads your eyes into the background.

Kash + Grant = Robin Williams?

My attempt to make a Moneyface bears an uncanny resemblance to Robin Williams. I'm thinking that when you look at the mashup, your mind combines the distinctive features into one face. I'm wondering if this phenomenon is something similar to the McGurk effect, where two contradicting stimuli create the perception of a third discrete stimulus. It would be interesting to explore this further.

Yesterday, I spoke to Project Pivot high school students about personal interpretation, creativity and open-endedness in art. I gave them a simple Cube personality reading, had them describe the things they saw in abstract drawings (a phenomenon called pareidolia), and had them rename famous works of art (Kelis' song "Milkshake" was a frequent lyrical muse). I wrapped it all up with a presentation of my artwork and a discussion of new possibilities for art.

While cleaning out my apartment in preparation for my move back to Fort Wayne, I rediscovered this one-session oil painting from 2009. I kind of like it. I remember using the canvas itself as a mixing board, so that explains the color daubs on the right.

I painted this portrait as a wedding gift for my next door neighbor from Fort Wayne. It's been over a year since I've gotten out the oil paints, so this was the perfect opportunity to get back into it. I kept track of my hours, and it took 60 of them from start to finish. Synesthesia Self-Portrait

Synesthesia is the ability to perceive specific stimuli through another sense. In this painting, I translated touch sensations into colors. Working on top of the finished value study, I would lightly brush my finger over each area of my face; then I would select the hue and intensity of the color I felt for that area. The color contrast is the most intense on the lips, in and around the eyes and along the hairline, as these areas felt the most sensitive.

I'll have to try this again in a month or two, to see how arbitrary my color choices are.

2011 Columbus Arts Festival

Well, the 2011 Columbus Arts Festival is over, and it was one to remember! To kick things off and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Festival, we released this video.

During the Festival, I was in charge of a program called Expose Yourself, where festival artists and local artists gave technical demonstrations of their work. The best part: I got to promote my fellow recent CCAD alumni. Ryan Walters works on his portrait of Alejandro Bellizzi below.

We had a great crowd, good weather and great sales. Then, Saturday night disaster struck. Without warning a microburst struck the Festival, destroying tents and artwork. It was the closest I've ever felt to being in a tornado. Luckily everyone made it out in one piece, and we persevered through the next day. If you want to support the artists who lost their work, please donate to the Artist Relief Fund.

Last night I was honored with the 2011 AICUO Grand Award. I had the wonderful opportunity to meet several student artists and arts professionals from around Ohio. My great friend Chris Greathouse went home with the People's Choice Award. Fellow Hoosier (and fellow Fort Wayne native) Caleb Boller won the Sculpture Design Competition, so I got to take home his creation. I'm thinking it's time to start a retirement fund.

My good friend Jessie Hampton and I had a caricature face-off using Photoshop and our Wacom tablets. I started with the linework, like my Cedar Point friends would do. Then, I used airbrush style shading on a layer underneath the lines. I should do these more often.

Gauntlet: Rough Draft

Last Friday I tested Gauntlet, my newest project for my first solo exhibition. Having forbid myself from making another visual experience, my concept for this piece developed into a pathway for participants to feel and hear the sculpture. Magnetic Face Building Activity for CMA

This is my SketchUp rendering of the face building activity to be installed in the Columbus Museum of Art's Wonder Room. Using these iron-based structures as the foundation, visitors will be able to use magnets to construct faces with everyday metal objects, like teaspoons, screws and muffin molds. The activity will accompany Stephan Balkenhol's wood chiseled Large Head, 1993, represented in the sketch as the largest structure and pictured below.

These are some of the complaints I submitted to the Columbus Museum of Art, which is organizing Columbus' own Complaints Choir. In the spirit of Finnish artists Tellervo Kalleinen and Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen, David Holm will compose a song based on local complaints to be performed on Saturday, June 5 at 7 p.m. A recording of the performance will then be on view in the Museum. Emily Rickard's Gatherings

Emily Rickard’s thesis exhibition is among the strongest in recent years at the Columbus College of Art & Design. Rickard gathers non-traditional art objects, like buttons, scrunchies and candy wrappers, and combines them with the traditional mediums of painting and drawing in her abstract compositions. She balances all elements effortlessly.

Upon entering the gallery, viewers are immediately hit by the wondrous eclecticism of The Silken Tent, a 12-foot quilt that radiates with color, shape, sparkle, pattern and object. Happy fields of yellow and red are amplified with dots, stripes and patterns of every color. Rickard offsets this intensity with calm patches of neutrality. Piece by piece, the shapes emerge as objects. The dark pattern on the left reveals itself as a black-and-red striped tie, while a tablecloth is the quiet brown near the bottom.

Rickard devoted all four years at CCAD to the creation of The Silken Tent. She dedicates the quilt to Aminah Robinson, whose multimedia RagGonNons (pronounced “Raggin’ ons”) take decades to accumulate. Where Robinson easily retells urban mythologies, Rickard’s poetic presentation allows viewers to imagine the unique histories and meanings of the objects. The familiarity of her materials conjures universal memories like the sweetness of chocolate from a gold wrapper or the sparkling pop sound from flattened bubble wrap.

Other significant gatherings include Wallpaper and Diamonds, a constellation of rectangular blocks that twists like a meteor in slow motion. The translucent materials in Bardstown Road cast delicate shadows as they float between two sheets of glass.

Rickard celebrates the art and artifacts of the past, with fascination and wonder. She gathers from many sources, but assembles her own vision.

Someone censored my trial proof of The Birth of Aesthetics in the printmaking lab in Kenay Hall. The vandal made a leaf out of some kind of fabric and pinned it to my print. I guess my print reminds the vandal of Eve. It looks like the censoring is a little bit off though, better luck next time. Thank you for bringing more attention to my artwork!
